Want to dye dark brown hair into a dirty blond?

ok so my hair is a dark brown. I tried dying it blond and it did NOT work at all!What can i do to get the color i want? if i have to bleach it can i just bleach it a little bit and then add the color i want? Btw my hair is not that long its like up to my neck? If there is another way besides bleach please tell me and dont tell me to go to a hair salon or anything like that i have to do it myself. i need hair soon! cuz my hair looks like a freaking mess!?
