Why won't my house heater cut off?

My wife an I were laying in bed and heard what seemed like the A/C blowing out very strong. After checking it out, we relized that the heater was now on and would not go off. I had to flip the breaker from the breaker box for it to do so. Any ideas why anf how to fix? It is an older model Coleman A/C - Heater.
