Is coal the next transportation fuel of the future?

Just got off a ship moving coal between VA and MA. Along with bunker oil they also burnt coal in their boilers. At 1/4 the price of oil it made perfect financial sense even if we did put out a thick cloud of dirty brown smoke all the way to the horizon.
